It wasn’t me. I never noticed it before, but it’s a striking observation. On closer inspection, the single woman’s shadow doesn’t quite line up.
I’m guessing inked in, or even some antique photoshopping of the figures themselves. As to why, the shadows provide that horrific Chirico-esque atmosphere, but if every one of those geometric shrubberies had one, it would have been incredibly messy. The effect would have been lost.

Someone pointed out around the fire the other night that the people have shadows. Nothing else in the photo does.
